About this Event
The social media have found in a youth environment a field of expression and these tools, also used by high personalities and sometimes against common communication and diplomatic uses, have become double-edged swords. As much as social networks can build, even more they can destroy, with the often-unconscious complicity of young people. Social media are a power that only needs to be properly used.
On social media the tense security situation in Cameroon has taken another dimension. Indeed, social networks remain the most accessible source of information for many Cameroonians. Only this is the most effective way for malicious people to manipulate the truth, to disseminate secret documents about the administration and national security, to publish bad information, to pass violent messages, to call for hatred and instigate rebellion. These people use the youth who take care, most often naively, to maintain the chain of misinformation and incitement to violence.
As an organization promoting peace and non-violence, WILPF Cameroon has been able to measure the scope of such actions that contribute to radicalizing certain positions and could plunge the country into a cycle of violence and hatred. That is why in the project of Prevention of electoral violence through the " Women's Situation Room", the emphasis is placed on training on non-violent communication and the use of social media to promote peace.
In this program, WILPF Cameroon is now holding with the support of Women's March Global, a training workshop for 50 young people on the use of social media in order to prevent abuses, ease perceptible tensions, educate and raise awareness about peace and non-violence.
