The second annual Women's March San Carlos - Mujares Adelante will occur on January 20, 2019 in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. The goal of the March is to increase awareness of, and provide funds, to help women who have, or are experiencing domestic violence. Funds raised last year from the more than 200 participants went to Agua y Mas, a small shelter with only 3 beds, located in Guaymas; San Carlos can be considered a suburb of Guaymas, but is the destination for winter visitors from the US and Canada. This year we will raise more money and support the services of DIF, the government sponsored program that offers a 24 hour hotline, counselors/ psychologists, and job training for women. A silent auction and raffle will be held at the March.
The coordinator of the March is Lynn Cannon who has been a winter visitor for more than 30 years. Her daughter and grandchildren live in Guaymas, so her interest in helping local women is personal and heartfelt. She hopes to mobilized a small group of other winter visitors to assist in facilitating the March and fundraising efforts. Mexican women from the local governmental institutions and non profit groups will work hand- in-hand with the winter visitors to create a coalition for continued efforts to reduce domestic violence. An educational effort in the schools is a long range goal, as well.
